How to Fix Closed Eyes in a Photo with AI

Opening the eyelids isn't enough: the gaze has to match the turn of the head, the light and the original expression.

Local reconstruction

Opening your eyes means restoring the eye, not inserting two beautiful irises.

The shape of the eyelids is related to the brow, cheeks, head rotation and facial expression, so automatic editing can make the eyes too large, point them in different directions or change a person discreetly.

Best Reference: A Neighboring Frame from the Same Series

It retains the age, makeup, lighting and direction of the camera. The second most reliable option is another portrait of a person with a similar head rotation. Frontal selfies don't help to correct the profile: visible eye shape changes along with the angle.

02 · Form

Keep your eyes planted instead of copying their pixels into a pixel.

Check the distance between the inner corners, tilt of the eyelid line, height of fold and position of eyebrows. The iris should partially overlap with the upper century: a fully visible circle often creates a frightened expression.

03 · Direction

Both eyes look at the same point, but they don’t look alike.

Because of the head rotation, the far eye is already visible from a different angle. The symmetrical copying of your near eye creates a flat mask; glare in the iris must correspond to one light source and be in aligned places.

04 · Formulation

Limit editing to the area of eyelids and eyes

Request.Carefully open your eyes in the main photo, using the second frame as a reference for the shape of your eyelids and the color of the iris. Save face, eyebrows, nose, cheek, expression and head rotation. The look is directed to the camera, natural-sized eyes, the upper lid partially overlaps the Iris, glare corresponds to light on the left.

Don’t ask to remove wrinkles, change your smile and improve makeup at the same time: this widens the area of intervention and makes it difficult to check for similarities.

05 Acceptance

Reduce the image first, then look at your eyes large.

General plan

The look is natural, the expression remains the same.

Portrait

The size and fit of the eyes did not change the face.

Big.

Eyelids, eyelashes, iris and glare do not contain tears.

Selection of reference

The next frame is more important than the “beautiful eyes” of another person

The best source is a photograph of the same series: the exact same head rotation, distance to the camera and direction of light. If you don't have one, choose a portrait of that same person with a close angle. Other people's eyes may look realistic but change recognition.

When you check, look at four connections: the upper eyelid follows the shape of an eye socket, the pupils point to a single point, glare corresponds to the light source, and the skin around the eyes is not younger or smoother than the rest of the face. If you also change your smile, nose, or oval, then the editing is no longer local.

Limitation

Without a reference, the exact shape of the eyes remains an assumption.

The model can create a believable look, but not restore hidden pixels. For a personal archive, mark such processing as reconstruction, especially if the source is the only historical frame.

Outcome

Fix the moment of blinking, not create a new expression

The narrower the area of editing and closer the reference in perspective, the higher the chance to maintain recognition without the effect of an artificial look.
