Why AI Adds Details That Were Never in the Photo

Sharpness increases, but with it can come data that wasn't in the source, separating the observed amplification from plausible guess and factual error.

Sharpness can grow faster than credibility

The AI can build a convincing eyelash, a fold of fabric or a pattern on the decoration where the source only shows a blurred spot. Visually, the result becomes richer, but the connection with the original scene weakens. Before improving, it is useful to decide which details should be accurate and where plausible interpretation is permissible.

01 · Mechanism

Improvement does not reveal the hidden original

When there's not enough information, the model uses context: eyelashes are likely next to the eye, repeated weaving on the fabric, windows and signs outside. This helps make the image whole, but it doesn't prove that the detail existed in this way.

ObservableContour continues

The shape is visible in several adjacent areas and can be amplified without changing meaning.

Probable.Context suggests

The material is clear, but the specific texture is already a model choice.

Fictional.No foothold.

A new pattern, letter, decoration or feature appears.

02 · Cost of error

The same fiction has different weights

The DomainAdmissionWhy?
Leafs and abstract backgroundbelowMore important is the overall texture than the exact position of each sheet.
Fabric without drawingmoderateWe need to preserve the material and direction of the folds.
Face, decoration, tattoohigh-riseA new little thing changes the recognition of a person.
Text, document, marking of productscriticalA plausible symbol is still an actual error.
03 · Scale

Check both the large fragment and normal size.

At 100 percent scale, you can see double eyelashes and broken edges, but that's what provokes an endless hunt for micro-details. The size of the publication is different: whether a person has become plastic, whether the sharpness has drawn attention, or whether there is still hierarchy in the frame.

100%Technical cleanliness

Eyes, teeth, hair, edges of objects, repeated textures.

PublicationIntegrity

Face, main object, light, natural depth and lack of visual noise.

04 · Request

Ask for more readability, but don’t invent content

PurposeMake your face and clothes a little more distinct.Save.Leave facial features, jewelry, fabric pattern and background as on the source. The borderReduce colored noise and gently raise local contrast. Don't add eyelashes, text, decorations or details in dark or blurred areas.

Prohibition does not return missing pixels, but reduces the likelihood of aggressive reconstruction and sets a more conservative nature of the result.

05 · Decision

Stop when the next sharpness stops helping the task.

Are we seeing the main object yet?Important signs match the source? Can the new details be explained by a visible signal?Does the picture look natural in normal size?

If the first three answers are positive, an additional retry rarely makes a result more useful; it rather changes one plausible interpretation to another.

Quick test.

Compare the two independent results

If the same trifle appears in two versions differently, the source probably doesn't specify it accurately enough. For decorative backgrounds, this is acceptable. You need a different source or separate controlled layout for a face, logo or document.

Test on a fixed crop and at the same magnification, otherwise the version with stronger contrast will seem more accurate simply because it is easier to see. The coincidence of a large shape does not prove the reliability of small details.

There's a simple stopping criterion: if the controversial element affects the identity, price, labeling or meaning of an image, there is not enough plausibility. The area needs to be confirmed with another frame or left softer. For foliage, clouds and neutral walls, a small amount of variability usually does not change the usefulness of the photo.

Outcome

A good improvement makes the visible clearer.

It doesn't have to turn every soft spot into a catalog of microparts, and the more important the actual accuracy of the face, text or product, the conservative the reconstruction has to be.
