A good improvement preserves the feeling of night
The night shot doesn't have to be light and perfectly smooth, it has to show the important thing, keep the natural skin and leave the shadows deep. When the noise is removed too aggressively, the face turns into a wax mask, hair sticks together, and wet asphalt loses texture.
First, separate the noise from the real detail.
Colored dots in homogeneous shadow, random ripples and hot pixels are all noise. Eyelashes, hair strands, pore, droplet and tissue texture have direction and continue between adjacent areas. If processing removes both types of signal equally, the frame becomes clean but fake.
Colored ripples with no shape or connection to the scene.
Edge, strand, seam or drop with a clear direction.
A dark area where there's not enough data to reliably recover.
Plastic results appear for different reasons.
The shadows rise equally, the sky grays and the face looks glued into a daytime scene.
Noise disappears along with pores, bristles, thin hair and clothing material.
In places without information appear false eyelashes, contours of teeth and random background details.
Boost readability with steps, not one effect.
- 1Find the main target.
Determine what should become distinguishable: face, person, car or interior.
- 2Correct the general light moderately.
Do not try to return information in completely failed areas.
- 3Reduce the colored noise.
It is more noticeable and less similar to the real texture than soft brightness grain.
- 4Bring back the local contrast.
Check your eyes, hair, clothes and wet surfaces separately.
Ask to save the night, not just "improve quality"
PurposeMake your face and clothes more distinguishable, keep the night atmosphere.ProcessingReduce colored noise and gently raise details in medium tones.ProtectionSave your skin's natural texture, bristles, wet hair and deep shadows. Don't paint details in completely dark areas.
If the frame is shot in color, specify what light source exists in the scene. Otherwise, the model may mistake the neon or showcase for the wrong shade and neutralize the atmosphere.
Look at the result in full size and in a small ribbon
- Face. The features are preserved, the skin has not become a homogeneous plastic.
- Hair. There are individual strands, not a solid glossy mass.
- Shadows. They remain dark, but they don’t look gray.
- Light sources.Lanterns, showcases and reflections explain the direction of glare.
- Small details.New contours did not appear where the source showed nothing.
A lubricated object and a dark object are different problems
Noise suppression does not return movement stopped by a long shutter speed. If the face is smeared over several pixels, an improvement can create a convincing but unreliable portrait, which is better used as atmospheric, and for the personality to choose another source.
Night photography can be clean without becoming daytime
Keep shadows and texture, remove random colored noise in the first place, and do not require reliable details from the model where the camera did not record them.
