Old photo changes face as recovery turns into guesswork
The scratch can be removed, but you cannot reliably extract the eyelashes or lip shape if those parts are not in the pixels. The more that is lost, the more actively the model complements the portrait with probable features - and the carefulr it is necessary to separate cleaning, restoration and artistic reconstruction.
A blurred detail cannot simply be made sharp.
Older shots have grain, fading, blemishes, cracks and low resolution at the same time. By removing noise, an algorithm can mistake wrinkles for defects; by amplifying sharpness, it draws the boundaries of eyes and lips; coloring the frame, selects skin and hair shades without a reliable source.
The problem is especially noticeable on familiar faces: a slight change in the distance between the eyes, chin line or age does not prevent you from seeing a “beautiful person”, but a relative immediately notices that this is another person.
Four Levels That Should Not Be Mixed
| Operation. | What's changing | Risk to the face |
|---|---|---|
| Clean-up | Dust, individual scratches, frame | low |
| Tonal correction | Contrast, fading, balance | low |
| Reconstruction | Rifts and small areas lost | moderate |
| Reconstruction | New details of the face, clothing, background | high-rise |
The request for "restore, paint, make it sharp and modern" jumps right up to level four. It's more reliable to get a clean neutral copy, compare the face, and then decide separately whether you need colorization or artistic enhancement.
Compare your face by stable points, not by impression.
- Head and jaw contour. It must repeat the source, not become more symmetrical.
- Eye and eyebrow position.Check the distances and tilt, even if your eyes are more expressive.
- The shape of the nose and lips.New sharpness should not create a different profile.
- Age signs.Wrinkles, creases and cheek volume are part of personality, not noise.
- Asymmetry.Small differences in the sides of the face are often more important than perfect smoothness.
Keep the source side by side and compare at the same scale. The memory quickly gets used to the improved version, so switching between two frames is more reliable than viewing one by one.
Restore the image from safe to risky
- Make a good scan.No glare, promising tilt and an aggressive phone filter.
- Save the master copy.Never overwrite a single source.
- Remove major physical defects.Without changing the face, clothing and background outside of damage.
- Adjust the tone.Return the readable range of light and shadow without Plastic-looking skin.
- Magnify moderately.Stop when new details cease to be confirmed by the source.
- Color with a separate version.Color reconstruction should not replace a neutral restored copy.
When is the best time to maintain imperfection?
A little granularity is more honest than a smooth wax face, a soft eye is fairer than the new iris. If the key feature is covered by a crack, you can prepare two versions: conservative with minimal intervention and reconstruction with an obvious mark, which is especially important for family archives and historical materials.
How to Set a Conservative Recovery
Start with the boundary: "Clear scratches and dust, repair only damaged areas. Save facial geometry, age, expression, hairstyle, clothes and original composition. Don't rejuvenate, don' t change features or add details that can not be inferred from the picture." Colorization and background changes leave for the next version.
A good restoration returns a photograph, not reinvents the person.
Separate cleaning and reconstruction, check for consistent features after each step, and keep the source close by. The more important the documentary value of a frame, the less space should remain a beautiful guess.
