Short vs Detailed AI Prompts

Length doesn't guarantee accuracy. We compare two formulations of the same problem, and we figure out which parts help the model and which make the requirements compete.

A good detailed prompt is no longer for the sake of length: it pinpoints an action, a goal, boundaries and a finished result.
Brief conclusion

A detailed prompt is useful as long as each sentence reduces uncertainty.

Length alone does not improve quality. A short command loses when it forces the model to guess object and boundaries of editing; a strong blur fails if it contains several equal actions and conflicting constraints; working wording is usually placed in four semantic blocks.

How to make a test of 25 identical tasks

We put together five groups of five tasks: remove the object, replace the background, improve the portrait, change clothes and assemble advertising visuals. For each, we prepared two versions. The short one named only the action, the detailed one added the exact goal, invariants and readiness criteria.

It's a reproducible editorial protocol, not a published benchmark of a particular model: we don't come up with winning percentages here; the reader can take pairs, execute them in his instrument, and evaluate by three attributes -- if an action has been performed, whether an important one is preserved, or if artifacts have appeared.

02

When a short team is really stronger

"Make the background white" is enough if there's one well-separated product in the frame and everything else can be changed. Additional reasoning about the studio, catalogue and sales expands the solution space, although the task is local. The same applies to understandable creative scenarios where the user cares more about an idea than saving every detail.

One goal.

The object is unambiguous and occupies a noticeable part of the frame.

Freestyle

Composition, light and details can be entrusted to the model.

Low cost of error

A small amount of variation does not make the result useless.

Good source.

Borders, face and background are read without further explanation.

03

When the details prevent reworking

Local editing requires you to name not only what changes, but also what remains the same. "Take away the person on the left" becomes a verifiable task after refinement: restore railings and tiles, do not change the protagonist and lighting. The detail here does not decorate the request, it specifies the contract.

Short, but ambiguous.

"Enhance the photo."

"Align the exposure and sharpen your face. Features, age, clothing, background and framing don't change."

Short, but without limits.

"Replace the background for the office."

"Replace only the background with a bright, modern office. Save the person, pose, clothes, edges of hair and direction of light."

04

Why a very long promp could get worse

Five actions begin to compete: a new dress requires a different posture, evening light conflicts with the preservation of original shadows, and accurate inscription with pictorial stylization. The model chooses to compromise and often loses the main thing. Divide the request into stages if each action can be checked separately.

If there's nothing to add, don't fill it for the sake of length. A good prompt ends when a model no longer has to guess an important decision for a user.

Practice

Five Tasks Where Length Affects Differently

Removal of the object. A short command is enough if the object is one and the background is simple; on tiles or furniture, you need to name the restored lines. Retouch. The word "improvement" is too broad: it's helpful to list light, noise and sharpness, then forbid changing age and facial features. Background replacement. The main addition is the direction of light and preservation of hair edges.

Trade photo. You need the format of the site, background, shadow and a ban on distorting the packaging. Creative image. Here, a detailed contract sometimes gets in the way: enough hero, visual language and mood. Delete each sentence before you launch and ask if an important decision of the model will change without it. If not, it's decorative; if it describes a second operation, move it to the next run.

Outcome

Do not count the words – consider removed uncertainties.

A short command fits a free task. Accurate editing requires purpose, boundaries and readiness criteria; everything else is better removed or moved to the next stage.
