Replace Backgrounds Behind Glass and Transparent Objects

Glass doesn't have the usual opaque edge, the lace is made up of holes and the veil blends in with the background. We're figuring out how to preserve the physics of the material, not just its silhouette.

The exact silhouette is not enough: transparent material must interact with the new scene.
Atlas of the edge

A transparent object cannot be separated from the background by a single hard line.

The glass shows the scene through itself, the lace consists of holes, and the veil mixes its own color with what is behind. When you replace the background, it must retain not only a silhouette but also the way the material interacts with light.

01 · Materials

Glass, lace, veil and transparent plastic require different solutions

Glass.Refract the background

Inside the contour should remain distorted lines of the new scene, highlights and edge thickness.

Lace.Alternating thread and emptiness

The background is visible in the holes without milk haze, and thin threads retain the pattern.

fataIt mixes two colors.

The density of the fabric changes at the folds, so transparency is not the same throughout the area.

Plastic.Gives you a double edge.

It is necessary to keep a transparent wall, the color of the edging and objects inside.

02 · Frontier

The working area consists of at least three zones.

Nucleus

An opaque thread, a frame, thick edge or seam. The exact shape is important here.

Transition

Semi-transparent pixels, reflection and color reflex. They can't be turned into a white border.

background

A clean new scene that passes through the holes and affects the transparent surface.

The halo appears when the transition zone still contains the color of the old background, and if you just increase the contrast of a mask, along with the halos will disappear thin threads and soft folds.

03 · Light

A new background must appear inside the material.

A transparent object cannot retain the old reflections after a radical change in its surroundings; a glass on a dark stone will have different glare than a light tree; and a white veil against a blue background will become colder in thin areas, but its dense seam will remain almost white.

04 · Instructions

Describe a physical property, not just the name of an object.

ExampleReplace the background behind the white lace cloth with dark green, keep the exact pattern of threads, clean holes between them and soft translucent fibers at the edge, remove the bright halo of the old background, do not thicken the lacy or turn empty areas into gray film.

For glass, instead of filaments, fix the edge shape, transparency, refraction and natural glare. For a veil, name folds and gradual change in density.

05 · Control

When you need another source

The red-lighted edge no longer contains a picture of the material

If the white fabric is completely fused with a white background, the exact pattern at the border cannot be restored. The model will offer a plausible continuation, but it will not document the original product.

For a product or important object, take an additional frame against a contrasting neutral background. This reference does not need to be published: it is needed as a map of shape, density and edge for the subsequent scene.

Outcome

High-quality background replacement preserves material behavior

The silhouette can look accurate and still be wrong. The real criterion is that glass refracts, lace passes the background, and fabric mixes light without a cut edge.
